history

Coakley Cay was originally given to William Lockhart of Baronald, Scotland, around 1700. In the late 1960s, his descendant, Captain Victor George Lockhart, became the legal owner of this private island. Captain Lockhart was one of the first, as the heir to the Loyalists to the King of England, to claim and actually receive land ownership. Captain Lockhart died in 2008 at the age of 99. He was one of the founding members of the Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) of the Bahamas and he campaigned strongly for the interests of the Bahamian island owners and people.

Today the Bahama Island is owned by its heirs. At times over $ 25 million was offered to buy the island, but it remained family-owned.
