Coal Island is an island overgrown by tussock grass near the western end of South Georgia . It is on the west side of the entrance to Coal Harbor .
Scientists from the British Discovery Investigations mapped them between 1926 and 1930, the crew of the research ship HMS Owen repeated this between 1960 and 1961. The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named them in 1963 based on the bay of the same name, which got its name here from whale and Seal hunters of stored coal ( English coal ) owes.
