Cobitis meridionalis is afreshwater fish foundonly in Lake Prespa and its tributaries. He is a member of the genus Cobitis within the family loach and is considered endangered .

features

Cobitis meridionalis reaches an average length of 8 to 10 centimeters and a maximum of 12 centimeters. It has a characteristic pattern of spots that is gray and olive and six threads of beard. He has a forked thorn under each eye and his head is flattened on the side. The males have two small bone plates at the base of the first (unbranched) and second (branched) fin rays of the pectoral fins, which are known as the circular laminae .

Way of life

This fish lives in sandy or muddy bottoms in Lake Prespa , where it primarily eats bottom invertebrates. In April to May, Cobitis meridionalis spawns between stones in flowing water.

Danger

The population of these fish is small and is expected to remain stable. Nevertheless, this species is classified as endangered by the IUCN , due to the small population and the small and restricted habitat. The fish is neither used commercially nor caught, but humans are still a potential risk. The fish is endangered by water pollution in local agriculture and households. The introduction of alien species would likely have a negative impact on the population of Cobitis meridionalis and affect the entire lake.
