features

They are slender and small fish that can reach lengths of 5 to 16 cm. Their drawing, which consists of a back stripe and four longitudinal stripes or rows of spots on the sides of the body, is characteristic. The small mouth is below and surrounded by three pairs of barbels. In a skin pocket under each eye there is a thorn that can be folded out by muscle movements and locked with a bone joint. The males have a small bone plate at the base of the first (unbranched) and second (branched) fin rays of the pectoral fins, which is called the lamina circularis.
