Cocama

The Cocama (also Cocoma ) are an indigenous people in the Peruvian part of Amazonia , but also in neighboring areas of Brazil and Colombia , especially on the lower reaches of the Ucayali , Marañón and Huallaga rivers .

According to SIL International , there are still around 15,000 to 18,000 Cocama in the ethnic sense in Peru alone, as well as 200 in Brazil and less than 100 in Colombia.

The language of the Cocama ( Cocama-Cocamilla ) is only spoken by a few hundred, almost entirely old people. The Cocama-Cocamilla is one of the Tupí languages within the Tupi-Guaraní family . It is most closely related to the Omagua language .
