At 450 m, Cockburn Peak is the highest point on Cockburn Island in the Weddell Sea east of James Ross Island and north of Seymour Island .
The British polar explorer James Clark Ross discovered him on January 1, 1843 during his Antarctic expedition (1839-1843). Measurements were made by 1903 participants in the Swedish Antarctic Expedition (1901–1904) under the direction of Otto Nordenskjöld . Further measurements were carried out in 1947 by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey . The British Antarctic Survey conducted geological surveys between 1995 and 1996. The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named the mountain in 1999 based on the name of the island that is home to it. It is named after the British Admiral George Cockburn (1772-1851).
