Coordinates: 12 ° 9 ′  S , 96 ° 52 ′  E The Shire of Cocos (Keeling) Islands is a local government area (LGA) that belongs to the Australian state of Western Australia . The area is 14 km² and has about 550 inhabitants (2016).

The Cocos Islands (Cocos Islands), also called Keeling Islands are an archipelago in the north-west of the Australian continent about 2900 kilometers northeast of the Western Australian capital of Perth and about 1,000 kilometers southwest of Sumatra . The headquarters of the Shire Council is on Home Island , where about 400 residents live (2016).

The Cocos Islands Council has seven members. They are elected by all residents of the Shire. The Cocos Islands are not divided into districts. The chairman of the council (Shire President) is also recruited from among the councilors.
