Codices Cambrai

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Codices Cambrai are two manuscripts on parchment that were written around 1430–1440 and contain choral works . They are in the possession of the Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Grâce de Cambrai in Cambrai under the call numbers CA 6 and CA 11 .

The manuscripts contain 3 hymns and 22 ordinarium sentences, including sentence pairs from Glorias and Credos , which are listed in separate categories. The authors are not named, but there are works by Guillaume Du Fay , Gilles Binchois , John Dunstable and Johannes Franchois de Gemblaco, among others .

The manuscript is in black and red mensural notation , with both the musical notation and the folia being unusually large so that they could still be read by a larger choir. The codices are considered to be the earliest example of the large-format chorale books customary later on .
