from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Coenraad Zijtsema (* July 15, 1702 in Leer ; † April 28, 1788 ibid) was a line owner and ship owner in Leer.

Life

Zijtsema was born in 1702 as the son of master weaver Kaspar Conrads Zijtsema. The family probably came from the province of Groningen and belonged to the Mennonites in Leer. By marrying his second wife, the Mennonite Maria van Hoorn, Zijtsema became related to the reputable Leeraner linen shipping companies van Hoorn and Vissering.

Zijtsema was a co-founder of Zijtsema & Companie. The company imported linseed from the Baltic States. Later, the range was expanded to include brandy, coffee and tobacco and the company became a shipowner.

The car park in Leer is still a reminder of the entrepreneur and his family today.
