Col du Parpaillon
The Col du Parpaillon is a mountain pass in the French Alps . An unpaved dirt road connects La Condamine-Châtelard , which is located in the Ubaye valley in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence department , with the municipality of Crévoux in the Hautes-Alpes department . The actual pass height is at 2780 meters above sea level. However, this cannot be approached because under the summit of the pass a 520 meter long tunnel at a height of 2637 meters connects the south-east ramp with the north-west ramp.
The construction of the high-alpine route by French engineering troops began in 1891 and was only completed after 20 years in the summer of 1911 due to the adverse high-alpine conditions and the difficulties in building the very long peak tunnel at the time.
Since the well-developed road runs parallel over the Col de Vars , it is used today almost without exception by tourists and local shepherds.
