Colleen Lake (also Lake Colleen and Foam Lake) is an approximately 1 km × 0.5 km large meltwater lake in the Antarctic Victoria Land . It is located about 3.5 kilometers east of Péwé Peak in the upper Garwood Valley , between the lower sections of the Joyce Glacier and the Garwood Glacier . The lake was created by the blockade of meltwater flowing away from the upper part of the valley at the foot of the Garwood Glacier.
The lake was first discovered from the ground on January 14, 1958 during Operation Deep Freeze III by the US geologist Troy L. Péwé (1918-1999). He gave it the Irish name Colleen because the lake resembles the many clear, reflective lakes in Ireland . In 1994, the New Zealand Geographic Board (NZGB) suggested the name Foam Lake because brown foam often collects at the western end of the lake. The Board on Geographic Names (BGN) accepted this proposal in 1995, but withdrew the decision in 1999 as a mistake, whereby the lake got its original name back.
