As a college jackets (English: jacket Letter or Letterman jacket ) refers to blouson -like, casual jackets, the average bomber jackets are similar and are fed mostly in a similar manner, but they usually have more color design, often lettering , logos or emblems on. In their original function, the color combinations, lettering and logos were used to identify membership of a college or a sports team of a college (therefore designed in the corporate colors / corporate design of the college / team). College jackets in this narrower sense are also used as merchandising products. Today, jackets in the college jacket style are also offered as fashion items, especially by brand manufacturers, without their being intended to be worn in colleges. Then they are usually provided with the lettering and logos of the brand .

history

The origin of the college jacket lies on the campus of Harvard University . From 1865 onwards, the best players on the baseball team were awarded an "H" on their jersey. However, this letterman jacket had to be returned as soon as the player no longer performed well.

The honor of wearing the letter on the Jersey was usually only given to upperclassmen, i.e. students in their third and fourth year (also called juniors and seniors ).

In the early years of the 20th century, these awards on jerseys were adopted by other universities and schools, and from 1930 the varsity letter was embroidered on the college jackets, which were then made of wool and had leather sleeves. These jackets were mostly in the colors of the university and very often had the logo or mascot embroidered on them. In many cases, the last name of the player can be read on the back.

However , the jackets quickly became fashionable accessories from purely functional clothing with a recognition value . Designers discovered the potential of the often colorful garments and produced the sporty college jackets for the general public. By the 1980s at the latest, jackets experienced a fashionable revival. The logos of real or fictional sports teams still adorn the jackets today.

nature

College jackets are usually cut short and end just below the waistband. The cut is wide and blouson-like. The basic colors are usually strong and bright, white counter-patterns and colored logos provide the contrast. Modern college jackets are available in both an unlined version for summer and a lined winter version.
