Colmeal da Torre is a locality and former municipality in Portugal . It is known for the Roman villa Centum Cellas .

history

The Torre de Centum Cellas tower building

The Romans had been here since the 2nd century BC. A village called Centum Cellae , with Roman country estates and a tower building that has been preserved until today and was later used as a prison. The site is now listed as Villa Centum Cellas as an architectural monument. The present-day town emerged after the Reconquista and received its first town charter in 1194 as Centum Celas , for the purpose of resettlement.

Colmeal da Torre became an independent municipality in the Belmonte district in 1949, when it was separated from the municipality of Belmonte. In the course of the territorial reform in 2013, it was merged again with the municipality of Belmonte to form the new municipality of Belmonte e Colmeal da Torre .

Colmeal da Torre was a parish ( freguesia ) in the district ( concelho ) of Belmonte . It had an area of ​​7.4 km² and 725 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).

As part of the administrative reorganization in Portugal on September 29, 2013, the municipality was dissolved and merged with the municipality of Belmonte to form the new municipality of Belmonte e Colmeal da Torre . Belmonte became the seat of the new municipality, while the municipal administration in Colmeal da Torre remained as a citizens' office.
