Colonia Valdense is a city in southern Uruguay .

geography

Colonia Valdense is located in the department of Colonia on Ruta 1. The distance to the eastern state capital Montevideo is 121 km. In the northeast, the neighboring town of Nueva Helvecia is less than ten kilometers away , while Chico Torino and the Arroyo Sarandí Grande , which runs between the towns, are to the south . 67 km west of Colonia Valdense is Colonia del Sacramento , the capital of the department.

history

Originating in 1856 from a settlement of eleven Waldensian immigrants from Villar Pellice in Piedmont , the name of the place goes back to Petrus Valdes , the French founder of the Waldensians . Colonia Valdense was given the status of " Pueblo " on January 6, 1951 by Law No. 11,742 .

Infrastructure

The area around Colonia Valdense is one of the most developed in the south of the country and is mainly characterized by agricultural livestock and milk production. The Liceo Daniel Armand Ugón is located in Colonia Valdense . The school was founded in 1888, making it the second secondary school institute in the interior of the country. 14 kilometers outside Colonia Valdense, on the banks of the Río de la Plata, between the towns of Los Pinos and Playa Fomento, Parque 17 de Febrero is part of the Waldensian church .

Others

The theologian and resistance fighter Annemarie Rübens , who emigrated from Germany, lived in Colonia Valdense since 1936. From 1938 on, your house in Rübens became the meeting point for German emigrants on both sides of the Rio de la Plata and made it possible for many Jewish and non-Jewish children of emigrants to spend holidays. In 1973, after the military coup in Uruguay, Annemarie Rübens reopened her house to children of politically persecuted parents before she had to leave the country herself.
