Come By Chance is a municipality ( town ) and port settlement on the island of Newfoundland, which belongs to the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador .
Come By Chance is located on Placentia Bay , on the south coast of the isthmus to the Avalon Peninsula . The Come By Chance River flows into the sea in the northwest of the parish. The Trans-Canada Highway runs along the eastern municipal boundary .

history
The settlement, originally referred to as Passage Harbor by Governor John Guy in 1612 , has also been known as Comby Chance since 1706 . After a telegraph station was built in the early 20th century, the population slackened again in the 1930s. For centuries, local fishing has been an economic cornerstone of the settlement and region.
Come By Chance got its fame today through the oil refinery built in the early 1970s with the associated deep-water oil terminal. The company, inaugurated in 1973, went bankrupt just three years later and ceased operations. After several sales, in 1986 for one US dollar to the US company Newfoundland Energy, the refinery was put back into operation in 1987. Today Come By Chance is one of the largest Canadian ports in terms of handling volume.
