The house Comeniusstraße 32 is a listed city villa in Dresden 's Johannstadt district .

history

The two-storey villa was built in 1906 as a plastered building with sandstone structures in neo-baroque shapes according to plans by the Dresden architect and Villa Romana scholarship holder Heinrich Tscharmann for the chemist and privateer Walter Luboldt, formerly co-owner of the pharmaceutical company Gehe & Co AG (a forerunner of today's McKesson Europe AG ) , built. The design and the sculptural decoration of the facade are by Karl Groß , the interior by Oswin Hempel , the lavishly designed garden was created by the landscape architect Großmann. In the interior of the building, wooden ceilings with inlay work and artfully forged banisters are particularly important.

In the 1930s and 1940s, the villa served as the residence of the Saxon NSDAP Gauleiter, Reich Governor and Prime Minister Martin Mutschmann , which is why it is popularly known as the "Mutschmannvilla". In 1943 Mutschmann had a private reinforced concrete bunker built by SS pioneers in the building's garden. This was the only civil air raid shelter built in Dresden ; only air raid shelters were available for the "normal" population . The villa burned down during the air raids on Dresden on February 13 and 14, 1945. The bunker was replaced by new buildings in the 1990s.
