background

Honduras has a history from 1955 to 1979 by numerous coups marked and military governments. A civilian government was elected in 1981, but human rights violations did not decrease. The military unit Battalion 316 , which was trained by the US Central Intelligence Agency in both Honduras and the US , and which also worked closely with fascist Chile under the dictator Augusto Pinochet , was responsible for numerous assassinations, kidnappings, and murders Torture responsible. Amnesty International estimates that at least 184 people disappeared in Honduras between 1980 and 1992. The Honduran military is said to have been behind these crimes.

founding

The organization was founded in May 1981 by doctor Ramón Custodio Lopez, a founding member of the Medical College of Honduras. He remained chairman of the organization until 1999.

aims

The organization's goals were initially limited to human rights. But they have expanded to include social and economic goals.

Structure and organization

Andrés Pavón Murillo has been Chairman since 1999. In spring 2009, the CODEH management met with Manuel Zelaya . Zelaya and the CODEH leadership found a lot in common

Government response

During the 1980s the organization was harassed and intimidated by security forces. The CODEH chairman of the northern region of Honduras, Miguel Ángel Pavón Salazar, testified before the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACHR) in October 1987 and was shot on January 14, 1988. The Inter-Parliamentary Union Council brought evidence that the murder was related to the testimony of Angel Pavon and reported the testimony of Fausto Reyes Caballeros, a former member of Battalion 316. He gave the names of some comrades who were responsible for the murder.

The current chairman, Andrés Pavón Murillo, has already been sued three times and an unsuccessful attempted murder has been carried out on him.

CODEH reports

The organization claimed in mid-2006 that seven ex-members of Battalion 316 ( Billy Joya , Alvaro Romero, Erick Sánchez, Onofre Oyuela Oyuela, Napoleón Nassar Herrera, Vicente Rafael Canales Nuñez, Salomón Escoto Salinas, and René Maradianga Panchamé) held important positions in the administration President Manuel Zelaya innehätten
