Comlongon Castle

Comlongon Castle is a tower house near the Scottish town of Clarencefield in the Council Area Dumfries and Galloway . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A. It is also classified as a Scheduled Monument .

description

The elongated Tower House is isolated around one kilometer west of Clarencefield. Presumably it was built around 1450. In 1900 a villa was added. The masonry of the five-story defense tower is made of quarry stone with natural stone details. The elongated, mostly small windows are irregularly distributed along the facade, with the larger windows being provided with iron bars. The building closes with a cantilevered, crenellated battlement. The seated house is designed with stepped gables . An iron gate blocks the entrance portal on the north side.

The villa is stylistically adapted to the Tower House. Details made of reddish sandstone stand out from their quarry stone masonry. The asymmetrically constructed building is designed with stepped gables and cantilevered components. The roofs are covered with slate. The design is attributed to both John M. Bowie and James Barbour who may have collaborated.
