Command Post Tango ( CP Tango ) is an underground bunker and military command post for the Joint High Command of the United States Forces Korea (USFK) and the South Korean Armed Forces . Tango is an abbreviation for Tactical Air Naval Ground Operations Center (German: "Tactical air, sea and ground warfare center"). The facility, located about 17 kilometers south of Seoul , is the primary command and control post for a possible Korean theater of war.

history

Even during the Korean War , it was clear to the military planners that the capital Seoul was too close to the demilitarized zone (DMZ) for it to be advisable to set up a new American headquarters there. In order to avoid a possible nuclear strike on Seoul in the future, it was decided to build the CP Tango , an underground bunker facility that was also supposed to withstand the use of NBC weapons .

Immediately after the end of the Korean War (1953), construction began on the plant in a granite mountain south of Seoul. At that time, the United States began building comparable nuclear-safe command centers around the world in preparation for a Soviet first strike in the Cold War era .

In March 2005, US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice toured the command center. The system has had a modernized information infrastructure since July 2006, which has significantly improved usability and performance.

investment

The facility offers space for over 2,000 people and equipment for several weeks of self-sufficient operation. The limiting factor here is not the energy or air supply, but the food reserves. In addition to a large fuel store, the bunker has its own power plant, an air filter system and a self-sufficient water supply. It has several floors with space for the joint staff of the American and South Korean armed forces as well as various subdivisions, such as news and communications. The command post is guarded by a cross-armed forces special unit .
