Committee of Estates

The Committee of Estates existed from 1640 to 1660 and ruled Scotland during the Wars of the Three Kingdoms when Parliament was not in session. It was dominated by the Covenanters , whose main faction was that of the Earl of Argyll .

The term "Estates" refers to the three estates that made up the committee: the clergy , in this case bishops, the nobility and the landlords and the representatives of the royal castles. The bishops were excluded after the anti episcopal Covenanters gained control of the Scottish Government and so the Bishops' Wars provoked
