Companies Commission of Malaysia

The Companies Commission of Malaysia (mal. Suruhanjaya Syarikat Malaysia) (SSM) is the national Malay commercial register and is responsible for the establishment and deletion of corporate forms under Malay law and the registration of foreign companies in Malaysia . It is designed as a public corporation ( statutory body organized) and differs from commercial registers of other countries that exist as a court or administrative authority.

The organization was established in 2002 under the Companies Commission of Malaysia Act 2001 . With this establishment, two registries, the Registry of Business for partnerships and the Registry of Companies for corporations, were dissolved and the tasks were transferred to the newly created organization.

Its main office is in Kuala Lumpur , while there is at least one branch in every Malay state. Organizationally, the Ministry of Domestic Trade, Co-operatives and Consumerism oversees the commercial register, since according to the law the minister appoints the board of directors (commission). The management is led by the Chief Executive Officer , who is assigned two directors. Internal Audit and the Training Academy report directly to the CEO , while the commercial register is divided into three departments:

  • Registry and Business Services deals with the formation, dissolution and bankruptcy of companies.
  • Cooperate Services is responsible for the administration of the commercial register, personnel management and the budget.
  • Regulatory and Enforcement conducts external audits and inspections.
