The Compaq SystemPro is considered to be one of the first x86- based servers.

The SystemPro was introduced by Compaq in November 1989 and was intended as a file server to replace the minicomputers previously used for this task . The system supported asymmetric multiprocessing so that server processes could be outsourced to the second CPU. Up to two 386 or 486 processors were supported. The system also contained a proprietary RAID system and supported the EISA bus , which was new at the time . The prices were between DM 33,500 and DM 55,000  .

Some manufacturers made clones of the system because of the great success of the SystemPro. The SystemPro was initially replaced by the SystemPro XL in October 1992 and then by the servers of the ProLiant series.

In addition to a specially adapted version of SCO Unix , applications such as Microsoft's LAN Manager support the SystemPro. The last time Windows NT 3.1 supported the SystemPro.
