Comprehensive History of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (German: Complete History of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter- day Saints ) is a six-part series of history books about the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints . The series was written by BH Roberts and published in 1930. BH Roberts was a General Authority and the Church's official historian at the time.

background

After the American Historical Magazine (a journal of the American Historical Association ) published an article suggesting that Joseph Smith had copied important parts of the Book of Mormon from a certain Solomon Spalding , Roberts requested the possibility of a public correction in the magazine . This was allowed to him. The editor of American Historical Magazine was so enthusiastic about the written correction that he wanted Roberts to publish a detailed history of the LDS Church. The magazine was ready to change its format and number of publications so Roberts could get the job done. Roberts wrote The History of the Mormon Church in forty-two articles for the magazine. These articles were published from July 1909 to July 1915.

After the last article was published, the First Presidency wanted to publish it as a book in six volumes. However, this failed because of the costs, although Roberts agreed to it. Roberts even wanted to put the articles together in a single book. His model for this was Essentials in Church History by Joseph Fielding Smith . In 1928 the Apostle , George Albert Smith asked him if he could control and update his work for publication in 1930. In 1930 it was the centenary of the Church.

To make this work useful by Church members, an indexed version was published by Brigham Young University in 1959.

reception

The Comprehensive History of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has been described as Robert's “most important historical work” and as his “ magnum opus ”. It is seen as the "best historical work" before the New Mormon History academics appeared. It was superior to any "work on Mormon history that had previously appeared." It was the first work to describe such a long period of Mormon history, describing each epoch of Mormonism in such detail. It precisely stated the primary and secondary sources and rejected historical myths. However, the work has been criticized because it shows a strong bias for Mormonism and uses romantic terms.
