The Compuware Corporation is a US-based software company headquartered in Detroit , Michigan . It was founded in 1973 by Peter Karmanos Jr. , Thomas Thewes, and Allen Cutting. Compuware employs around 4600 people worldwide (as of 2012).

According to its own information, the company has more than 7,100 customers worldwide, including 46 of the 50 highest-grossing companies in the world according to the Fortune Global 500 and twelve of the 20 most visited websites in the United States.

history

Foundation and early years

In 1973 Compuware Corporation was founded by Peter Karmanos Jr. , Thomas Thewes and Allen B. Cutting . Four years later they presented their first software product: Abend-AID ; it was developed to find errors and to carry out corrections in IBM mainframe systems. Abend-AID is still standard software on this market today and around 8,000 licenses are currently in use.

In 1978 Compuware opened the first remote office to serve the Washington, DC and Baltimore areas .

1980s

Compuware launched its File-AID product line in the 1980s . The File-AID products help programmers and software developers to find, create, distribute, compare or convert data quickly and easily. Compuware also announced Playback , the company's first automated testing tool. The company's headquarters were later moved from Southfield to Farmington Hills, Michigan. At this time it also oriented towards the European market and opened the first branch.

1990s

During the 1990s, Compuware acquired many other companies including: Centura Software, XA Systems, EcoSystems Software, UNIFACE, Hiperstation, Coronet, Direct Technology Limited, DRD Promark, Inc, Nu-Mega Technologies, Data Processing Resources Corporation, Programart, and CACI Products Company.

In 1992 Compuware went public. While sales in 1997 were $ 100 million, by April 1998 they had exceeded $ 800 million. At the end of 1998, sales exceeded the one billion dollar mark for the first time. In 1999 the company had more than 15,000 employees, what occasion was new locations in Campus Martius Park in Detroit ( Michigan to tap).

2000s

In 2003, for the company's 30th anniversary, a new headquarters was completed in downtown Detroit . As part of the Compuware 2.0 campaign , a new slogan was introduced in 2008: "We make IT rock around the world". In December 2014 Compuware was taken over by Thoma Bravo . Until then, Compuware was listed on the stock exchange.

In March 2020, BMC Software notified its intention to acquire Compuware to antitrust authorities for review.
