Concepción is a city in Paraguay on the Paraguay River and the capital of the Concepción department . The city has around 84,550 (as of 2018) inhabitants. It has an important port that cargo ships call at on their way to Mato Grosso in Brazil .

history

Concepción was founded on May 25, 1787 by the governor Agustín Fernando de Pinedo to prevent an advance of Brazil from the north and to pacify the Indians of the region. It only experienced its boom in the early twentieth century through Italian immigrants and is now a center in northern Paraguay with a river port. The Paraguayan civil war began in Concepción in 1947, which is why it is also called the Revolución de Concepción (Revolution of Concepción).

Since 1929 the city has been the seat of the Roman Catholic diocese of Concepción .

From 1909 to 1960 a narrow-gauge railway, Ferrocaril del Norte , connected Concepción with Horqueta. In May 1988, a bridge was inaugurated over the Paraguay River.
