Conception Island is a small island less than two kilometers off the west coast of Mahé , the largest island in the Seychelles . The island is around 1.5 km long, up to 600 m wide and has an area of 0.603 km² (60.3 ha). Administratively, it belongs to the administrative district of Port Glaud , together with its neighboring island Thérèse .
Like many islands in the Seychelles, Conception Island was a coconut palm plantation until the 1970s . Today it is a nature reserve and home to many bird species, such as the rare Mahé spectacled bird ( Zosterops modestus ), the paradise fruit dove ( Alectroenas pulcherrima ) or the Madagascar turtle dove ( Streptopelia picturata ).
