Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations (CoP, "Presidents' Conference"), based in New York City, is an umbrella organization of Jewish organizations in the USA .

description

CoP describes itself as "a central point for US, Israeli and other world politicians to consult on issues of critical importance to the Jewish community".

The conference was formed on the basis of a request from the US administration Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1956 years. Because of the strong growth of Jewish communities in the USA and the differentiation of their interests ( Orthodox Judaism , Conservative Judaism etc.), they created the CoP in order to be reachable for the government with a common voice.

The presidents of 51 Jewish associations currently meet at the conference at irregular intervals. They make fundamental statements or meet with important world politicians. The conference was founded to promote the interests of the State of Israel in the United States. This is her main concern to this day. It does not draft comprehensive principles like the Jewish Council for Public Affairs, for example , nor does it lobby like the American Israel Public Affairs Committee .

Current agenda (2006):

  • Global terrorism
  • Israel's security, peace with Palestine
  • global anti-Semitism
  • Defense against attacks by Arab countries in UN bodies, UN reform
  • Promotion of pro-Israel media coverage
  • Strengthening Israel through investment and military aid
  • Iranian nuclear weapons program , Syria
