Conscience is a north German music project by the multi-instrumentalist RI. There are other bands / projects with this name, but they were all formed later.

history

Conscience was founded in August 1991 by RI as a solo project. Before that, RI contributed lyrics and vocals to two pieces of the short-lived project AGONY. Until then, RI had only had experience with his father's home organ and subsequently developed an aversion to organ sounds. The first cassettes were made with the help of an Atari 1040ST with the “Creator” software as a sequencer. However, due to the lack of equipment, these were still purely instrumental.

The cassette Calls of Despair contained mostly sung pieces for the first time. The Tales cassette raised the music to a more professional level through the use of the then current Korg 01 / W synthesizer. In 1993, The day will come was the first contribution to a sampler on CD. Further cassettes and sampler contributions followed. At the same time, the equipment was continuously expanded.

In 1997 work on hardware took place . Four titles were selected from this for the first EP CD release. The CD was released in 1998 on the label Kafue-Systeme.

From 2007 to 2009, the albums and EPs were released on NewEx Records in small editions and offered for the first time in large numbers in download shops. In 2009 the project switched to the Echozone label and released the album Gravity has gone .

From 2007 to 2013 there were a number of guest singers with Conscience, including Katharina Burges and Stian Shiver, Dan Söderqvist (Twice a man) on I can't get away , Colin Angus (The Shamen) on Falling or Mel (Future trail) on The future . Perception and falling (remix) in particular attracted attention.

Since RI neither has a live band nor enough time for rehearsals and performances, so far there have only been three performances with changing line-ups. Over the years, RI made numerous remixes for other artists under the name Conscience. As for Mystigma , ! Distain , in good faith, Arctic sunrise or Moon74.

The first full album in three years was announced on Facebook for 2020.

style

Conscience's music is shaped by a variety of influences, ranging from the electronic music of the 1970s and 1980s to wave , synthpop and EBM . So these influences were combined again and again on the albums and staged with changing focuses. The style is mainly characterized by the use of unusual sounds and the wealth of ideas that exceeds normal levels, which is already evident in early works. This makes it easy to assign the project to a specific genre, such as B. Synthipop does not do justice to music.

Trivia

  • No Conscience track has ever been recorded in a studio other than Science2, its own home studio.
  • RI is a trained sound engineer and has never learned an instrument.
  • The first home studio was named Science Studio. After this studio didn't exist for almost three years, the new studio was renamed Science2. Other bands were later produced there as well. Despite changing addresses, the name of the studio has been retained to this day.
  • Of the numerous side projects, Science OCN in particular is currently active.
