Constantin Constantinescu-Claps (born February 20, 1884 in Beceni , Buzău district , † 1961 in Bacău ) was a Romanian general .

Life

From 1903 to 1905 he graduated from the "Școala militară", a military academy . In 1905 he was promoted to sublocotenent (lieutenant). In 1909, he was promoted to Locotenent (first lieutenant) and in 1913 to Căpitan (captain). He fought on the Romanian side in World War I and was promoted to Maior (Major) in 1917. In 1919 he became Locotenent-colonel (lieutenant colonel) and in 1925 colonel (colonel).

In 1939 he was promoted to General de brigadă (Brigadier General) and he became commander of the Romanian 7th Infantry Division. During the military dictatorship of Marshal Ion Antonescu , he rose further in the army and took part in the attack on the Soviet Union . He was initially given command of the VII. Corps on the Prut section, then from July 1941 he led the XI. Corps across the Dniester to Odessa . On November 9, 1941, he was appointed to succeed Iacobicis as Commander-in-Chief of the 4th Romanian Army . He commanded this army in the second half of 1942 during the Battle of Stalingrad and was promoted to General de corp (Lieutenant General). He was replaced by Constantin Sănătescu on February 10, 1943 after the army was broken up by the Soviet troops . A little later he was retired and in 1944 adopted as General de armată (Army General).

In 1951 he was arrested. He spent three years in custody and was sentenced to 15 years in prison in 1954. Surprisingly, however, he was released a year later. Constantin Constantinescu died in Romania in 1961.
