Contemporary Museum

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Contemporary Museum is a small contemporary art museum in Baltimore , Maryland .

The museum was founded in 1989 on the occasion of the first Day without Art (an American art campaign on the subject of AIDS ) as a local art initiative and had no permanent exhibition location for the first ten years. Instead, the museum's exhibitions and events took place on the premises of partner institutions such as the Baltimore Museum of Art and the Walters Art Museum . In 1999 the museum acquired a building in the Mount Vernon Place Historic District , a Grade I listed area in the historic heart of Baltimore. The building on Center Street not far from the Walters Art Museum previously served as an office building for Home Mutual Life insurance . After the renovation, it will have an exhibition area of approx. 150 m 2 .

There are three to four changing exhibitions per year. Well-known artists such as Louise Bourgeois (2006) were also exhibited, but group exhibitions and works by internationally not yet established artists who often have a connection to Baltimore predominate. The Contemporary Museum is funded by membership fees, the NEA, and local public funding and private donations. The museum was headed by Gary Sangster from 1996 to 2002. After an interim occupation, Thom Collins ran the house from 2004 to 2005 as Executive Director . From 2006 Irene Hofmann took this position. Deana Haggag has been the director since spring 2013.
