Contradiction is a band around the singer and guitarist Oliver "Koffer" Lux and the guitarist Oliver Kämper from Wuppertal . The band plays melodic Thrash Metal . Their style is often the old school thrash metal, which also bands like z. B. Kreator , Testament , Slayer and Sepultura played in the late 1980s and early 1990s, respectively.
Band history
Oliver Lux and Oliver Kämper founded Contradiction in 1989. Due to several live appearances in Wuppertal and the surrounding area, the band was able to record its first successes. In 1991 and 1992 Contradiction released two demo tapes. In 1993, the first self-published CD Rules of Peace appeared , which stylistically can best be classified as a mixture of Power Metal and Thrash Metal . Rules of Peace brought the musicians a record deal with the Wuppertal label "Strictly Stone Records", which resulted in the release of the 1995 album All We Hate (distributed by Rough Trade). On All We Hate , the band took a much harder and more aggressive path and, among other things, made use of modern school hardcore. After the band separated from Strictly Stone in 1998 due to various contractual disputes by court order, the EP Good Company was released , again in self-distribution . At Good Company , the band made a slight change in style and was keen to experiment in terms of sound and composition. After Christoph Zelt had to leave the band at the end of 1999 for family reasons, a new musical path was taken with the new drummer Tim Obernyer, which can be heard on the CD Contraminated . Contraminated deviated with eight of the ten songs from the previously followed Thrash Metal, made use of some alternative borrowings , but was not so successful. In the period that followed, Contradiction had to stop all activities in favor of a side project by Oliver Lux, Cyberya .
In 2003 the quartet played a whole series of live shows across Europe, in which the older songs came into play. In 2004 the composers of the band Oliver Lux / Oliver Kämper went back to the roots of the band and began writing songs for the album The Voice of Hatred in mid-2004 , which was finally released in May 2005 (Armageddon / Soulfood). In The Voice of Hatred then again aggressive Thrash Metal dominated. This was followed by a tour with Overkill through Europe and numerous live performances, including at the Wacken Open Air . At the end of 2006 Contradiction began with the recordings for the album The Warchitect , which was released again in November 2006 via Armageddon / Soulfood.
In November 2006 long-time bassist Karsten Heyn and drummer Tim Obernyer left Contradiction for personal reasons. They were replaced by bassist Andreas "Westi" Westphal and drummer Christoph Zelt. The latter returned to the band after 7 years.
In the years after The Warchitect was released , the band played numerous concerts across Europe, including a mini tour of Iceland in 2008, which no German metal band had done before.
In 2009 Contradiction recorded the Warchitect successor The Essence of Anger . Produced once again by singer and lead guitarist Oliver "Koffer" Lux, who this time also did the mix. The album was released on September 25, 2009 by Limited Access Records / Roughtrade.
Between 2009 and 2011 Contradiction played numerous concerts in Europe - including in Russia, Portugal and Malta.
At the end of 2010 Christoph Zelt had to leave the band again for professional reasons. He was replaced by Patrick Nau.
In April 2013 Ilija Jelusic from the band Schattenspieler replaced the bassist Andreas Westphal, who had left shortly before.
