Convento de São Bernardino (Câmara de Lobos)
The Convento de São Bernardino de Sena , in short Convento de São Bernardino (German Monastery of São Bernardino de Sena ) is a church and a monastery of the Franciscan Order , was founded in 1459 and is located in the municipality of Câmara de Lobos of the autonomous region of Madeira , Portugal . It was named after Saint Bernardine of Siena . The ensemble has been under monument protection level VL - Valor Local since 1996. The convent is now also the seat of the parish church of Santa Cecília.
The monastery was originally an oratory with only three monks: Brother Gil de Carvalho, João Afonso and Martinho Afonso. As the number of monks increased, it was decided to build a monastery on a donated property. The monastery was founded in 1459. Due to its proximity to a river, the original wooden building was devastated by a flood. The subsequent reconstruction led to improvements in the structural conditions and the organization of the monastery. The monastery was the first Franciscan monastery founded outside of Funchal.
