The Coosa County Jail (English for: "Coosa County Jail") also known as the Old Rock Jail (English for: " Old Rock Jail ") is a historic building in the city of Rockford in Coosa County in the USA . It is the oldest surviving stone prison in Alabama.
Coosa County was founded in 1832 and designated the town of Rockford (until 1835 "Lexington") as the seat of administration. In 1839 it was decided to build a stone county prison here for USD 2,745 (equivalent to around USD 75,000 in 2018). The three-storey building was built from natural stone in 1842 and has a floor area of approx. 6 by 12 meters. The building was used as a prison until 1938 and then as the county's file warehouse. On June 20, 1974, the Coosa County Jail was included in the National Register of Historic Places (German: "National Directory of Historic Places") and now houses a museum, the "Old Coosa County Jail Museum" under the direction of the Coosa County Historical Society . The prison is largely in its original condition from 1842, is the oldest surviving stone prison in Alabama and one of the few remaining buildings from the early days of Coosa County.
