Coppename Estuary Nature Reserve

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Coppename Estuary Nature Reserve is located in Suriname , in the Saramacca district .

The nature reserve was founded in 1966 and comprises an approximately 1 km deep coastal strip with an area of around 10,000 ha . This strip consists of mangrove forests and mud banks, east of the Coppename Estuary .

The bird breeding colony Fowrunesi ( Sranantongo , translated: bird's nest) is located here. The location of the sleeping and breeding grounds for scarlet ibis , eight species of heron and sometimes a few roseate spoonbills has often changed over the past decades, depending on the tide level within the mangrove area.

The reserve is also interesting because of its old and young parwaboss , black mangrove bushes ( Avicennia germinans ). The fishermen-inhabited stake villages Boromofo and Pralala on the streams of the same name are also within the area.
