When Hamilton Hume and William Hovell entered the bay during their expedition from Hume and Hovell in 1824, they met the Wautharong Aboriginal people who named the bay Jillong and the surrounding land Corayo . These names became common for Corio and Geelong in the 1830s.

shipping

The port of Geelong, the sixth largest in the country by tonnage, is located on Corio Bay.

At the time of the first settlers in Geelong, a sandbar across the bay from Point Lilias to Point Henry blocked the entry of ships into the inner harbor. At that time they had to moor out in the bay, and the cargo was brought to Geelong in small boats. At low tide it was sometimes possible to cross the bay on foot on the sandbank.

In 1853 the first navigable canal was built through the sandbank, which ships with a draft of less than four meters could navigate. In the 1860s this canal was widened to a depth of six meters. From 1881 a new canal was built. It was named Hopetoun Channel after Lord Hopetoun who opened it on December 20, 1893.

Management of the canal and port is the responsibility of the Geelong Harbor Trust , which was established in December 1905. In 1981 the Port of Geelong Authority took over this trust. This company was sold by the state to TNT Logistics in 1996 . It was later renamed GeelongPort .
