Cork coding
The Cork encoding - named after the Irish city of Cork , where it was established at the TUG conference in 1990 - or T1 encoding is a character set encoding for LaTeX . It comprises 256 characters and thus supports both Western and Eastern European languages with the Latin alphabet .

Due to the special features of the TeX program from Donald E. Knuth , the internal coding and the coding of the font used are linked to one another. For this reason, the Cork coding is implemented in many fonts for TeX. The reference implementation is provided by Jörg Knappen's ec writings . For many other fonts, Cork coding is implemented using virtual fonts .
