Cornelia Gallonia

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Cornelia Gallonia was a Roman empress and second wife of Emperor Valerian (253–260).

Only an inscription from Bulzi in Sardinia , published in 2004 , which names them as Augusta and Mrs. Valerians, reports the existence of Gallonia . Nothing else is known about Gallonia, but given their names a connection to the gens Cornelia and the gens Gallonia is likely. Perhaps she was a relative of Gallonius Basilius mentioned in the Epitome de Caesaribus , who allegedly brought the imperial insignia ( indumenta regis ) to his successor Claudius Gothicus on the instructions of the dying Gallienus . The historicity of the history and person of Gallonius Basilius is controversial, but he is gaining in probability as a historical person through a relationship to the imperial family.

She is also mentioned in the Historia Augusta as the mother of Licinius Valerianus , where her name is not mentioned.
