Cornelio Malvasia

Cornelio Malvasia (* 1603 ; † 1664 ) was a general , politician and astronomer in the Papal States .

During his military career, Malvasia rose to general in papal service and then became princely advisor and commander of the guard of Alfonso IV of Modena . In 1622 he invented the crosshair and while participating in the Thirty Years' War he found the time to translate the astrological writings of Luca Gaurico (1476–1558) into Latin. In 1644 he invited the astronomer Giovanni Domenico Cassini to Bologna and put him through as director of the Panzaro observatory.
