Cornelis Jord Ruijgh

Cornelis Jord Ruijgh (first name: Kees ; born November 28, 1930 in Amsterdam ; † April 16, 2004 ibid) was a Dutch classical philologist and linguist .

Life

Ruijgh studied classical philology at the University of Amsterdam from 1948 to 1953 . He then spent a year studying at the École normal supérieure , Paris , with Pierre Chantraine . The doctorate took place in 1957 on the basis of a proefschrift (dissertation) on the Achaean element in the epic language. He then worked at the Institute for Greek Linguistics at the University of Amsterdam. After the publication of his second book on Mycenaean Greek (Linear B) (1967), he was appointed full professor of Greek linguistics, in particular Mycenae and dialectology , in 1969. In 1995 he retired. In 2004 he died on a bench in Vondelpark .

Ruijgh was among other things co-editor of the magazine Mnemosyne .

His main field of work was ancient Greek linguistics, especially Mycenaean Greek and dialectology. His main work deals on over 1000 pages with the use of the ancient Greek enclitic particle τε, which is mainly used in the Homeric epic in an unusual way compared to Classical Greek. Apart from the aforementioned three book publications, his work appeared in the form of essays and detailed book reviews, which are collected in his Scripta minora .
