Corocoro is a 690 km² island in the mouth of the Barima River on the border of Guyana ( Barima-Waini region ) and Venezuela (State of Delta Amacuro ). The island, which extends from northwest to southeast, is bounded in the west, north and northeast by the Atlantic Ocean , in the south by the main arm of the Barima and in the east by a small tributary of this river.
A narrow strip of 78 km² (= 11% of the total area), which extends along the southeastern part of the Atlantic coast, belongs to Guyana; 89% of the island belong to Venezuela. Like all of western Guyana, the Guyanese portion of Corocoro is claimed by Venezuela.
