Agrippa with the Corona navalis

The Corona navalis (ship's crown), also Corona rostrata (ship's beak crown) or Corona classica (naval crown) was a Roman military award . It was awarded in the Roman Navy to the soldier who was the first to set foot on an enemy ship in battle and was comparable to the Corona muralis , which was awarded during sieges. It was made of gold and looked like an ordinary laurel wreath with built-in rams .

The award was also given to consuls who, as admirals, destroyed an enemy fleet. Marcus Terentius Varro received it from Gnaeus Pompeius Magnus in the war against the pirates. Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa is depicted on different coins with different shapes of the corona navalis.
