The Corral de la Morería is a stage restaurant for flamenco , a so-called tablao , in the Barrio de la Morería district in Madrid . After the Zambra, founded two years earlier, closed in 1975, the Corral de la Morería is the oldest tablao in the Spanish capital and one of the most renowned in all of Spain.

history

The tablao was set up in the building of an old dairy. The buildings were designed by an Italian architect, the decoration by the painter Juan Barba, who created the large painting in the background of the stage. The inauguration took place on the night of May 20, 1956 in the presence of the dancer Pastora Imperio . Other well-known artists who participated in the opening were Regla Ortega, Porrina de Badajoz, Salvador El Chaqueta, Andrés Heredia, Rita Ortega and La Chunga , who made her first appearance in Madrid on this occasion.

A number of well-known singers, dancers and musicians have performed there throughout the history of the establishment, including the sisters Bernarda and Fernanda de Utrera , Serranito , Antonio Gades , Arcángel , and Lucero Tena . La Paquera de Jerez made his debut at the Corral de la Morería, and guitarist Félix de Utrera performed there over and over again for 30 years.

After the death of the founder Manuel del Rey in 2006, his wife, the dancer Blanca del Rey, and their son took over the management of the establishment. In 2018 it was awarded a Michelin star and the national award for gastronomy.

Anecdotes

There are many anecdotes about the tablao and its owners, including the following: On one of the many nights that actress Ava Gardner was in the audience, she is said to stare at a man who was drinking a whiskey at the bar and fingering her they have shown. She went over to him and an argument immediately started. Before he left, he slapped her. It is said to have been Frank Sinatra .

Stage construction

The stage of the Corral de la Morería consists of a concrete block supported on steel girders. It is covered by a thick layer of rubber on which the wooden stage floor is located. Like a soundboard, it amplifies the zapateados of the dancers. Due to this construction, the stage floor has to be renewed once a month.
