Alonso Lobo , often referred to in the literature as Alonso Lobo de Borja (formally correct: Alonso Lobo y de Borja ), (born February 25, 1555 baptized in Osuna , † April 5, 1617 in Seville ) was a Spanish sacred composer from Andalusia late Spanish Renaissance .

life and work

Lobo was the son of Alonso Lobo and Jerónima de Borja from Osuna. At the age of eleven, Lobo entered the boys' choir of Seville Cathedral . He holds a Licenciado degree from the University of Osuna. On September 20, 1581 he was appointed Chapter Secretary. On May 26, 1586 Lobo was appointed canon in the collegiate church of Osuna. As of August 21, 1591, the chapter of Seville Cathedral placed Lobo as vice- conductor at the side of the aging master of the chapel, Francisco Guerrero . According to an agreement of September 2, 1591, Lobo received a payment of 400 ducats a year for this. In 1593 Lobo became Kapellmeister at the Cathedral of Toledo . In 1603 Lobo returned to Seville as Kapellmeister.

Alonso Lobo printed the Liber primus missarum in Madrid in 1602 with six four-to-six-part masses and seven four-to-eight-part motets.

Alonso Lobo did not achieve the fame of Tomás Luis de Victoria . But artistically it is hardly inferior to this. In his sacred music, Lobo offers a perfect combination of the counterpoint technique of Palestrina and the musical intensity of de Victoria .

Biographical irritations

Lexicographers have persistently confused the following facts regarding Alonso Lobo's biography. Alonso Lobo's birthplace was often incorrectly given as Borja in Aragon. Lobo's birthplace is definitely the Andalusian Osuna. The mistake arose from the fact that his mother's maiden name was "Jerónima de Borja". Alonso Lobo's parents definitely lived in Osuna. Willibald Gurlitt also made this mistake in his 1961 article on Alonso Lobo in Riemann's Musiklexikon and Carl Dahlhaus did not correct it in the corresponding supplement from 1975. The use of the name Alonso Lobo de Borja (i.e., as usual in Spain with the surname of the father and mother, formally completely correct in the form Alonso Lobo y de Borja ) is at least misleading against this background and should only be done carefully and clarify the facts.
