Corrie Schimmel was born on April 29, 1939 in the village of Bussum , today a district of Gooise Meren . She started competitive sports at a young age and set her first Dutch national record shortly after her 17th birthday. On May 8, 1956, in Naarden , she achieved a time of 2: 49.50 at 200 m butterfly on the short course. This year she set two more national records on the short course; on November 16, she also managed a time of 4: 58.00 over 400 m freestyle in Naarden and on December 30th a time of 2: 22.60 over 200 m freestyle in Naarden. Schimmel set her first national record on the long track on August 4, 1957, when she achieved a time of 5: 03.50 over 400 m freestyle at the Dutch championships in Rhenen and was allowed to call herself Dutch champion for the first time. In 1958 she was again Dutch champion when she came to a time of 20: 10.30 in the 1,500 m freestyle. Furthermore, she took part in the 1958 European Swimming Championships in Budapest that year . Behind her compatriot Jans Koster , she won the silver medal in the 400 m freestyle, but came to the same time as the gold medalist. In the team competition, the 4 × 100 meter freestyle, the Dutch women around Corrie Schimmel, Tineke Lagerberg , Greetje Kraan and Cocky Gastelaars emerged as European champions.

However, Schimmel had her successful year in 1959. In that year she not only became two-time Dutch champion (over 400 m freestyle and over 1,500 m freestyle), but also set six national records on the short course, ten national records on the long course, and eight European records. The following year she took part in the swimming competitions of the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome for her home country . In the heats to the 400 m freestyle, Schimmel came second in the second group behind the Australian Ilsa Konrads and qualified for the final. Here the American Chris von Saltza set a new Olympic record with a time of 5: 50.6; Schimmel finished seventh in the field of eight participants; only the Swede Bibbi Segerström left them just behind. In her Olympic year, Schimmel was able to celebrate several more successes; This year she became Dutch champion for the fifth time (over 1,500 m freestyle) and improved the national record over this distance to a time of 19: 45.10. This was also a new European record; on the same day she also set a new Dutch national record for the 800 m freestyle, with a time of 10: 18.90.

In the same year, the then 21-year-old retired from competitive sports. Nothing is known about her further life today.
