The spotted armored catfish ( Corydoras punctatus ) (in ignorance of the meaning of the term also called spotted armored catfish) belongs to the genus of armored catfish ( Corydoras ) in the family of armored catfish and callous catfish (Callichthyidae). It was in 1794 by the Berlin doctor and ichthyologist Marcus Elieser Bloch, then still under the name cataphractus punctatus described and the first catfish scientifically described at all. In English it is called Spotted corydoras or Spotfin corydoras.

Corydoras punctatus reach a maximum size of 6.6 cm, are spotted all over their head and body, have a striped tail and a black spot in the upper half of the dorsal fin . The points are largest on the head, on the back, and on the top of the body, they are closest. The basic color is smoky or yellowish gray. The fins are transparent, caudal and anal fin with dark rows of dots. The adipose fin has a dark spot.
Populations that live on dark surfaces have more and larger spots. The females are larger and fuller, the pectoral fins of the males significantly longer and thicker.
Fin formula : dorsal I / 7, anal I / 5–6, pectoral 1 / 7–8, ventral I / 5.
Bone shields: 22–24 / 19–21 / 3–4.
distribution
The species occurs in tributaries of the Suriname River in the South American state of Suriname and in the Iracoubo Basin in French Guiana . Spotted armored catfish prefer small, moderately sunny and shallow bays with sandy to sandy-muddy bottoms. They are also found on the edges of dead zones of flooded forests ( oxbow lakes, lakes).
