Coryphaena equiselis is a fish from the golden mackerel family(Coryphaenidae). It lives in tropical and subtropical seas around the world. There is no German name. In English, Coryphaena equiselis is called Pompano dolphin or Pompano dolphinfish. The species is not well known and is often confused with juveniles or females of the common golden mackerel ( Coryphaena hippurus ).

Coryphaena equiselis becomes a maximum of 1.27 meters long, but usually remains at a length of half a meter. The maximum age given is four years. The body of the fish is elongated and laterally flattened. The body height is around 20 to 25% of the standard length . Males develop a steep head profile with a bony keel in old age. The fish's tongue is toothed. The teeth take up 50 to 60% of the tongue surface. The color of the top is a metallic blue-green, the sides are silvery with a golden shimmer. Dead animals turn gray with green spots.

The dorsal fin is dark and begins in the neck and extends to the caudal fin, the anal fin extends from the anus to the caudal fin. Its front part is convex . The pectoral fins are at the level of the middle of the head. They reach half the length of the head.

Fin formula : dorsal 52–59, anal 24–28. Hard rays are missing.

Way of life

Coryphaena equiselis normally lives in small groups in the open ocean, sometimes it comes to coastal waters and undertakes long migrations. Sometimes the fish stay under floating objects or follow boats. They feed on small fish and cephalopods . The eggs and larvae are also pelagic.

On the coasts of northern South America, Coryphaena equiselis is an important target for deep-sea anglers, is freshly marketed and is considered an excellent food fish.
