The Cotter Cliffs are distinctive and up to 1500 m high rock cliffs on the Borchgrevink coast of the East Antarctic Victoria Land . They tower along the entire east side of the Hallett Peninsula .
The British polar explorer James Clark Ross named a supposed cape in the vicinity of the cliffs in 1841 as Cape Cotter during his Antarctic expedition (1839-1843) . Since there is no prominent cape along the east coast of the Hallett Peninsula, Ross' name was transferred to the cliffs described here. It is named after Pownall Pellew Cotter (1810–1866), captain of the research ship HMS Terror .
