Cotton Nero Ax

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The works called Cotton Nero Ax are a collection of medieval writings that the British Lord Robert Cotton brought together.

background

The documents are works that were probably created between 1250 and 1475. In the 17th century the texts were in the possession of the archaeologist Robert Cotton, who mentioned them in a catalog of his collection. This was supplemented by his son Thomas Cotton (1594–1662) and later by his grandson John Cotton (1621–1702). He bequeathed the entire collection to a trustee, which ultimately brought it into the possession of the British Museum in 1753 .

content

According to the catalog published by Cotton in 1696, the texts were numbered from one to six and divided thematically into three groups. The four Middle English texts were initially understood as a poem and listed in the catalog as Article 3 under the title Poesia in lingua Veter Anglikaner . This compilation comprises a total of 144 sheets.

Part 1, sheets 1 to 40

  • Article 1 - Justus de Justis: De dignitate procerum antiquissimorum Britonicum.
  • Article 2 - Letter from Justis to John Chedworth. (Letters from Justus de Justis to the Archdeacon of Lincoln dated 1468)

Part 2, sheets 41 to 130

  • Article 3 - Pearl , Cleanness , Patience and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight (This part is illustrated with twelve full-page images, believed to have been added between 1400 and 1410)
