Cotton Tree, Freetown

The Cotton Tree is the symbol of Freetown , the capital of Sierra Leone . The tree - a kapok tree ( Ceiba pentandra ) - has stood here at least since 1792. It used to be a place of pilgrimage for devout Sierra Leoneans and is still today a symbol of peace and wealth in the West African country.

The tree is also shown on the 10,000 leone banknote.

The National Museum of Sierra Leone is right next to the Cotton Tree.
