The National Museum of Sierra Leone ( English Sierra Leone National Museum ) is the largest museum in Sierra Leone and is one of only two museums in the country. It is a state-sponsored cultural and research facility. The museum is located in the historic center of Freetown in the Lucien Gent Garden by the Cotton Tree .
The museum was founded in 1957 under the name "Museum of the Sierra Leone Society" ( Museum of the Sierra Leone Society ). In 1967 the museum and its two small buildings, including the former Cotton Tree train station , became state property. Since then it has been run by the Ministry of Tourism and Culture . In 1987 it was expanded by an extension financed by Germany.
Numerous exhibits were stolen during the civil war in Sierra Leone between 1991 and 2002. With the help of the British Museum , a database of the existing objects has been set up since 2009.
